This thematic exploration is where the game truly excels. It effectively reflects complex emotions through its diverse cast of characters, taking the time to develop them deeply. This allows for impactful twists that leave you thinking, “I didn’t see that coming, but it makes sense.”
However, the very strength that makes the game shine also hinders it. Players might begin with expectations of an overarching mystery, but the story unfolds slowly, with meaningful connections not really forming until chapter three and beyond. Instead, you’re treated to poignant moments between Mark and his friends that foster their growth and understanding, which only become clear in significance after the story’s twists are revealed.
As a mystery, the game might seem poorly executed, but as a coming-of-age tale about confronting personal demons, it succeeds beautifully.
Regarding the characters, it’s challenging to assess most of them since the story mainly focuses on four individuals. I particularly connected with Cathy, Mark’s best friend; her character arc was so moving that it brought me to tears. Louise and Nicole felt somewhat similar and were harder to understand, but their interactions with Mark were meaningful, helping him open up.
Mark himself was an excellent protagonist, and his revelation near the end genuinely surprised me. Witnessing his growth, even as he faced painful truths, made me root for him. While characters like Sofia and Ridel were enjoyable, they had limited screen time, leaving me wishing for more of their stories. Overall, the game offers a compelling narrative experience despite its initial marketing misdirection.
