Women’s teams have a noticeably slower pace, which clarifies why they can’t compete against men’s teams. Their smaller goalkeepers often allow rebounds that male keepers would typically secure, so players should be ready to follow up their shots or, if on defense, hit the clear button (B or Circle) to get the ball away quickly. This adds a strategic element to gameplay. The women’s “International Tournament” resembles college soccer, reflecting the significant influence of American universities on the sport. Even at higher difficulty levels, mismatched teams can result in some extreme statistics, especially in shots on goal.
Women’s soccer in FIFA 16 isn’t a watered-down version of the game; the slower pace enables greater precision in passing, movement, and defense, setting the stage for effective counterattacks. Overall, playing with women’s teams gives players more time to strategize compared to the faster-paced men’s game. Commentators Martin Tyler and Alan Smith also provide dialogue tailored to the female players and clubs.
However, I wish there were more options available. The modes featuring women’s teams are limited to an unbranded tournament that caps at six matches or standard one-off play, which doesn’t provide enough context to enhance what is otherwise a refreshing approach to soccer. EA Sports has made commendable strides in representing the differences in women’s soccer, but the absence of mixed-gender competitions like Ultimate Team or Be a Pro means the women’s players have limited visibility. If you want to create a richer narrative for any of the 12 women’s teams, you’re left with just a generic tournament. I can’t help but wonder what would have stopped FIFA 16 from including a 22-match fantasy league for these national teams, complete with home-and-away fixtures, aggregated statistics, and player progression similar to the men’s game.
