My friend introduced me to Metal Gear Solid, and he wasn’t wrong when he called it one of the best games he had ever played. The game was bursting with creative ideas and felt fresh and exciting, making it a standout experience.
I can still recall how impressed I was with virtually everything about it, and the game left me with lasting memories that have stuck with me ever since. Here are a few highlights:
- Game Over Screen – The iconic music that plays when you die, along with the unforgettable cries of “Snake? Snake, Snaaaaaaaakkkke,” is etched in my memory.
- Codec Conversations – Interacting with my team, who provided backstory, hints, and tips, was so much fun. I often checked in with them just to hear more.
- Inventive Characters & Boss Battles – From Solid Snake (a slightly pervy super soldier) to Revolver Ocelot (a gunslinging torturer) and Sniper Wolf (a sexy, dog-loving sniper), the game featured some of the most memorable characters. Not to mention the epic boss battles!
- Torture Scene – The intense button-mashing sequence to prevent Snake’s death was torturous, but the satisfying vibration from my controller was a nice touch.
- Psycho Mantis – The memory card reading that referenced other save games, switching controller ports to confuse Psycho Mantis, and the blank Hideo screen that made me think my TV was broken – pure genius!
- Hidden Codec Code – The clever touch of hiding the codec frequency for Meryl on the back of the game case was another stroke of brilliance.
- Alert Noise – The iconic noise that signals you’ve been discovered by enemies became one of the most memorable parts of the game.
These are just a few of the amazing moments that made Metal Gear Solid such an unforgettable experience. As I prepared to play through it again, I was excited to revisit the classic. However, the graphics of this original 1998 version felt noticeably dated compared to the Twin Snakes remaster. While I knew it wouldn’t be the updated version, it was clear that this was a game from the PlayStation era.
